6.7% Decrease in Gas Bills for December: ARERA Updates and Future Outlook

This reduction occurs in a context of change in the energy market

Italian domestic consumers received good news with ARERA's announcement of a 6.7% reduction in gas bills for December 2023. This decrease represents significant relief for families during a period typically marked by high energy expenses.

Tariff Set at €36.60/MWh for December

This reduction comes amidst changes in the energy market. With the end of the gas protection scheme in 2024, the Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks, and Environment (ARERA) has proceeded with the last tariff update for domestic customers still under the protection scheme, those who have not opted for the free market.

In the future, the component of the gas price intended to cover procurement costs for the Vulnerability Protection Service customers will be updated monthly. This service, active for about 2.5 million households, will continue to follow the same criteria, times, and methods used so far.

The gas price to cover procurement costs, updated by ARERA, is calculated as the monthly average of the price on the Italian wholesale market (PSV day ahead) and is published within the first two working days of the month following the reference month.

For December, the tariff for the raw gas material was set at €36.60/MWh, reflecting the decrease in wholesale quotations compared to November.

The overall 6.7% variation for December is solely due to the reduction in the expenditure for the raw natural gas material. General charges and tariffs related to transportation and measurement costs remained unchanged.
