As the European Parliament elections approach, to be held from June 6 to 9, 2024, AIEL and Fiper support Bioenergy Europe's initiative by signing the manifesto "3 Steps Towards the Energy Transition."

This document proposes a clear strategy for phasing out fossil fuels and aims to raise awareness among European institutions about the importance of bioenergy for a sustainable future.

The 3 Goals for a Sustainable Europe

The Bioenergy Europe manifesto, supported by AIEL and Fiper, outlines three crucial goals for the European Union:

Strategy to Exit Fossil Fuels: The next European Commission is called upon to develop a strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, which currently provide about 70% of the EU's energy and produce around 8 billion tons of CO2 annually. Bioenergy Europe proposes adopting regulations that include a tracking system, a life cycle assessment of fossil fuels, criteria and maximum emission limits, and the end of fossil fuel subsidies by 2030;
Energy Security through Bioenergy: To improve energy security, the EU should incentivize local renewable energy production, particularly using wood biomass. Bioenergy, which currently accounts for 85% of renewable heat production, should be an integral part of an efficient renewable energy plan. Additionally, the EU should fund the replacement and modernization of biomass heating equipment to increase efficiency and reduce emissions and costs for consumers;
Bioenergy for a Carbon-Negative Future: Emerging carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, such as BECCS and biochar (BCR), enable bioenergy to become carbon-negative. These technologies allow for the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere during energy production, offering an innovative solution for environmental sustainability.

Statements from Industry Leaders

Domenico Brugnoni, President of AIEL, stated, "The energy transition must not create new forms of poverty and inequality. We firmly support the Bioenergy Europe Manifesto because we believe that bioenergy represents a strategic element to maximize the benefits of the ecological transition in Italy and Europe."

Michele Colli, President of FIPER, added, "Abandoning fossil sources for energy production is an essential commitment for Europe. Biomass, within the renewable energy mix, offers a concrete solution, particularly relevant for Italy, as it produces renewable energy and promotes the sustainable development of mountainous areas."

This initiative represents a decisive step towards a more sustainable energy policy, aiming to transform Europe into a global leader in combating climate change and promoting renewable energy.
