Decarbonization: the central role of research and cultural awareness

The latest issue of ENEA’s scientific journal "Energy, Environment, and Innovation," titled “Smart Future,” deeply explores the pathway towards decarbonizing the energy system.

In a context where the energy transition becomes increasingly urgent, ENEA President Gilberto Dialuce emphasizes the necessity of an integrated and coordinated approach. The intelligent transformation of energy networks and infrastructures, from production to final consumption, represents the common thread of the initiatives described in the journal.

Promoting Greater Cultural Awareness on Decarbonization

Dialuce highlights ENEA's commitment to innovative projects and the fundamental importance of research and development in achieving decarbonization goals. Additionally, he points out how these activities foster the formation of new professional skills required by the market.

Equally essential is promoting greater cultural awareness and social acceptance of emerging technologies, encouraging active participation from end-users in the transition process.

The priority actions for decarbonization include increasing production from renewable sources through advanced technologies and new energy management methods, such as renewable energy communities, sustainable mobility, and new digital technologies. Furthermore, the development of smart grids and the use of enabling technologies like the Internet of Things, blockchain, artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, robotics, sensors, and smart metering are crucial.

Giulia Monteleone, director of ENEA's Department of Energy Technologies and Renewable Sources, emphasizes that the transition to a renewable energy-based model requires the active participation of citizens and communities, fostering a profound cultural change.
