European Solar Day: 70.1 GW of new solar capacity installed in 2023

Forecasts indicate continuous growth in the European solar photovoltaic market, with a 10% increase to 77 GW in 2024 and annual installations expected to exceed 100 GW by 2026.

The latest Global Market Outlook by SolarPower Europe for solar energy 2024-2028 reveals that Europe installed 70.1 GW of new solar capacity in 2023.

This increase has allowed nearly 21 million European homes to be powered by solar energy, highlighting the rapid expansion of the sector.

European Solar Day: Solar energy has become an essential component of the energy transition

On the occasion of European Solar Day, celebrated on June 21, 2024, SolarPower Europe highlighted the growth of solar energy that occurred in 2023, reaching an operational total of over 300 GW.

In a message for European Solar Day, European Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson stated: “Photovoltaic solar has become an essential component of our energy transition, providing green and sustainable electricity to our homes. Solar installations, both globally and in the EU, are constantly increasing, representing 8% of the electricity generated last year in the EU. June 21, historically celebrated as the day of the Sun across Europe, is now the occasion to honor European Solar Day, symbolizing our commitment to a sustainable future and the progress made in solar energy. With the collaboration of our partners, we are revolutionizing the energy landscape, harnessing the power of the Sun for future generations.”

Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe, emphasized that solar continues to dominate among renewable energies, with 78% of the new global renewable capacity installed in 2023.

Forecasts indicate continuous growth in the European solar photovoltaic market, with a 10% increase to 77 GW in 2024 and annual installations expected to exceed 100 GW by 2026. This expansion underscores the growing importance and feasibility of solar energy in the energy landscape.

European Solar Day: SolarPower Europe collaborated with 54 cross-sectoral organizations

On June 21, SolarPower Europe collaborated with 54 cross-sectoral organizations to celebrate European Solar Day.

This event aims to raise public awareness of the benefits of solar energy and promote its rapid growth and potential across the continent.

The European Solar Day initiative, led by SolarPower Europe in collaboration with numerous organizations and associations, introduced a new digital Solar School this year. This educational platform, structured in 5 episodes, is designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and tools necessary to understand the power and potential of solar energy, exploring its history, advancements, and future energy progress.
