This week in Paris, world energy sector leaders gathered to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the IEA, emphasizing the joint commitment to energy security and the acceleration of the transition to clean energy sources, in order to maintain the goal of limiting the global temperature increase to +1.5°C.
The conference, attended by energy and climate ministers from about 50 nations, achieved strong consensus on the urgency of concrete actions and greater international cooperation for a rapid transformation of the global energy system, amid increasing geopolitical instability and record global temperatures.
Among the distinguished participants were Ursula Von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, John Kerry, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, and Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland.
200 Governments Agreed on Energy Goals
The event highlighted the IEA's mandate to intensify cooperation with major developing economies, initiating talks with India for full membership and announcing the opening of a regional cooperation center in Singapore, to expand the agency's engagement in Southeast Asia and beyond.
The meeting followed the COP28 conference in Dubai, where nearly 200 governments agreed on energy and climate goals for 2030, including phasing out fossil fuels, tripling renewable energy capacity, doubling energy efficiency progress, and reducing methane emissions.
IEA member country ministers outlined a series of mandates in a joint statement to guide the agency's future missions, which include ensuring global energy security, coordinating efforts against climate change in the energy sector, and supporting investments in clean energy transitions, especially in emerging economies.
The IEA, under the leadership of Executive Director Fatih Birol, was praised for its "significant contribution" to global energy and climate policy and for strengthening relations with developing economies. The ministers emphasized the importance of keeping climate change and sustainable development at the core of the IEA's activities and analyses.
India's Membership in the International Energy Agency
During the event, the importance of COP28 goals for the energy sector and the key role of the IEA in achieving them were recognized. Additionally, the initiation of discussions for India's full membership in the IEA was announced, acknowledging the country's strategic role in global energy and climate challenges.
The IEA and the government of Singapore announced the establishment of a new IEA regional center in Singapore, and the ministers took the opportunity to invite Latvia to become the 32nd member of the IEA and to welcome Costa Rica as a new candidate for membership.
IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol emphasized the agency's commitment to leading the fight against climate change in the energy sector, while ensuring the security of global energy supplies and working to increase energy access during the transition.
