World's largest Solar Bridge at Blackfriars Railwaystation

(UK) - The world’s largest solar bridge, with over 4,400 PV panels for a 1.103MW solar array, will generate an estimated 900,000kWh of electricity every year, providing 50% of the station's energy.
(London, UK) Blackfriars Station inaugurates world’s largest solar bridge, spanning the river Thames. With over  4,400 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels for a 1.103MW solar array the bridge of Blackfriars station will generate an estimated 900,000kWh of electricity every year, providing 50% of the station's energy and reducing CO2 emissions by 511 tons per year.

In addition to solar panels, other energy saving measures at the new station will include rain harvesting systems and sun pipes for natural lighting.

The installation of the 6000m2 of PV panels was carried out by Solarcentury, one of the world's leading solar energy companies specialized in solar panels & PV systems. Frans van den Heuvel, CEO of Solarcentury, highlights as their  work represents a great example of integration between solar power and  the city’s architecture. This project demonstrates that installation of solar  panels is possible even into the most complex engineering project, in this case being built above a construction site, over a rail track, over a river.

David Statham, Managing Director of  train operator First Capital Connect said
: “Electric trains are already the greenest form of public transport -  this "solar roof" gives our passengers an even more sustainable journey”.

The Railway station itself, has been completely renewed with a new entrance on the south bank of the Thames, four new platforms and a redeveloped underground station.

Simon Kirby, Managing Director of Network Rail Infrastructure Projects
said that the transformation of Blackfriars station to a modern landmark is part of a project which aims to enhance one of Europe's busiest rail routes using smart and sustainable technology to reduce the costs.
